What is Understanding Potential?

At UP we aim to provide a service that works with the public sectors such as schools, social services and the NHS and not in isolation. The clinic has experienced Teachers and SENCOs, Speech and Language Therapists, Dyslexia specialists and Clinical Psychologists who contribute to the assessment as required. At UP, we provide holistic and thorough neurodevelopmental assessments for children aged 6+, across the ability spectrum and with a variety of needs. Our assessments are individually led - we utilise the gold standard clinical assessments and will tailor the assessment process to your child's personal needs.  We provide reports containing the outcome of the assessments as well as recommendations specific to the child. If necessary, we will suggest further referral to other services. We are able to make diagnoses such as  Specific Learning Difficulty (including Dyslexia), Language Disorders, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC- also known as ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to name a few.

Ask yourself this:

  • Does your child frequently exhibit emotional or worrying behaviour in relation to learning, such as anger, anxiety or upset?

  • Is your child's academic progress inconsistent?

  • Do they stand out as being slightly different to their peers?

  • Are they struggling at school, but no one can put a finger on quite why?

  • Are they refusing to go to school or anxious about going?

  • Do you or the teachers feel they aren't meeting their potential?

  • Are there barriers to their learning?

  • Have they been assessed already but the outcomes are inconclusive?

  • Have you been told you can't get an Educational Psychology referral because they just aren't quite "struggling enough?".

If you answered yes to any of these then your child could benefit from a Neurodevelopmental Assessment.

You are welcome to contact us for more information or to discuss whether we are the right service for you.

Primarily, our remit is to help you, your child and the people around your child to gain a comprehensive understanding of your child's areas of neurodevelopmental strengths and difficulties. Neurodevelopment covers a vast array of abilities such as cognition (sometimes known as intellectual abilities), attention and concentration, language, social communication, memory, executive functioning and learning ability.  Every child in the whole world has a unique profile of neurodevelopment, and for some children is it essential we fully understand their uniqueness.  But why? Because behind all behaviour is a cause, a reason, a determination to get to an end goal. Where children's behaviour may be viewed as worrying or challenging by adults, often the reason for such behaviour is linked to a neurodevelopmental difficulty - often a subtle one.  By exploring a child's profile of neurodevelopment we can then better understand behaviour and ultimately put interventions in place to support children to achieve their potential. But without knowing what their neurodevelopmental potential is - we are left floundering in the dark. Thus, we believe assessment is the key.
