We felt listened to for the first time.
October, 2023

UP were fantastic from the moment we contacted them through to the final stages of giving us the report. They were incredibly kind and welcoming, and we felt listened to for the first time. They were gentle and respectful but thorough in conducting the assessments with our son and we felt that they had his best interests in mind. The report we received was very comprehensive and we felt that they had really seen and understood him as a whole person. The assessment has been hugely helpful in getting our son onto a suitable college course and helping us assess support for him. We are really pleased with the service provided and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

...the report we received was thorough, practical and easy to understand.

We recently engaged the services of Understanding Potential after concerns regarding our daughter's struggle at school. After an initial discussion regarding these concerns, Alex and Kirstie recommended an assessment. Instead of the concept of an assessment being daunting and overwhelming, both Alex and Kirstie made the process fun, engaging and, dare I say it, easy. Our daughter was happy, confident and came away feeling a sense of achievement from this process. Their ethos of ensuring the comfort of the child was very clear and I was invited to see part of it in action. Their communication throughout the process has been excellent and the 27 page report that we received is thorough, practical and very easy to understand. They have even written a report for our daughter so she can be empowered by her diagnosis. I would highly recommend Understanding Potential for anyone concerned about any aspect of your child's behaviour or learning.

We feel optimistic about our daughter’s future.

The outcome has been unbelievably helpful.  We can now see our daughter’s strengths and challenges in a quantifiable chart, showing not only her level but also in relation to where the majority of her peers would be at the same age. The first day our daughter was born, our experienced midwife told us that she is a highly stimulated child.  Every year her teachers, since the age of two, have commented on how intelligent she is, a bright, out-of-the-box thinker who has wonderful ideas and is not shy to share them.  Our daughter has always been an imaginative, creative, confident, feisty girl and a deep thinker. She was considered well at the top of her class academically, until she began to read and write.  This is when she began to struggle, in class and while doing homework. She would take a very long time to complete her tasks and her confidence was affected.  Covid created further challenges, especially the lengthy time spent away from school, learning from home. Our daughter is now 10 years old, having just completed year 5.  While her school and teachers have acknowledged that she requires additional support and she has been placed in several targeted intervention groups during her school day, she was not considered to be “bad enough” to fit the criteria for an educational psychology assessment through the school. As concerned parents, wanting to see our daughter happy and reaching her full potential, we began to research our options. We wanted to know if she had a diagnosable condition/s, and if so, we wanted to know to what degree she had this / these and we wanted to know what definitive ways we could help and support her, both at home and at school. That is when we discovered UP and we can only sing their praises.  Two highly qualified professionals, clinical psychologist, Dr Alexandra Livesey and speech and language therapist, Louise Fox, assessed our daughter privately as well as within her school setting, using objective clinical neurodevelopmental assessments with her, her teacher and us, her parents. The outcome has been unbelievably helpful.  We can now see our daughter’s strengths and challenges in a quantifiable chart, showing not only her level but also in relation to where the majority of her peers would be at the same age. It confirmed what we suspected regarding a diagnosis, and it helped clarify and rule out additional areas of concern that we questioned. I don’t believe there’s a better way to obtain an accurate diagnosis. The report is extremely thorough with much attention on ways in which our daughter can be supported now as well as in years to come. The follow-up consultation was equally thorough and helpful as Dr Livesey explained in detail all aspects of the report and outcomes. We now know that our daughter is putting is a huge amount of effort to obtain her current results.  We know now that she is not reaching anywhere close to her ability.  We know what specific direction to test her further. And we know how best to support her. We feel optimistic about our daughter’s future. Our daughter feels relieved to know why she has been struggling for so long and that there is so much that can be done to make learning and life easier for her, now and in her future. We urge any families in a similar position to us to get the professional help and guidance from UP.  We have not looked back.

We have been very pleased with UP as a service and feel we better understand our son's issues and are better able to support him going forward.
March, 2023

My son A was assessed in March 2023 by Understanding Potential. A has had lot of different issues academically and has been struggling a lot as work got more complex. Between us we decided it would be good to understand better what was going on and what his specific difficulties were. A initially had a session with Alex and one with Louise, each around 2 hours. A was made to feel at home when arrived for the sessions, with a friendly welcome from both Alex and Louise. Both ensured A had movement breaks and was comfortable for the assessments. Alex requested she do a further third session to clarify a few things so this was completed shortly after. The results from the assessment and the report were ready within a few weeks and an online feedback meeting was arranged. Our feedback session lasted well over an hour and we were taken through the report thoroughly with plenty of room for questions and discussions. The report is detailed and accurate and I felt it represented A’s difficulties very well. It contained observations that reflected what we see at home. We were clearly able to see where his specific difficulties lie and understand in more detail why he has difficulties in certain areas. In addition Alex did a feedback meeting with A where she outlined things for him in language which he could understand, always emphasizing his strengths. Further to that she wrote him a lovely report of his own which he much appreciated. We have been very pleased with UP as a service and feel we better understand A’s issues and are better able to support our child going forward.
