Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the assessment take?

The age and needs of your child will impact the length of the assessment. We will generally aim to see your child for the neuropsychology assessment at our clinic base and where possible the speech and language assessment within a school setting. The neuropsychology assessment takes between 2-3 hours, as does the speech and language assessment. In total, our core assessment process including seeing your child, collecting information, professional discussion and delivery of report and feedback takes between 12-14 hours.

Will I get a conclusive diagnosis?

In some cases yes, but we cannot guarantee it. Our primary remit is to help you, your child and people supporting your child to gain a comprehensive understanding of your child's neurodevelopmental profile - both areas of strength and areas of challenge/difficulty. If this neurodevelopmental pattern fits a specific diagnostic criteria we may make a diagnosis.

Why might we not get a specific diagnosis?

Diagnoses and labels can, undoubtedly be helpful and give a broad brush understanding of the reasons behind a child's behaviour. But rarely do they allow the people around the child to truly understand their specific and individual needs. Moreover, for some children and adults, there will never be a label that they neatly fit, yet they still have struggles and challenges that should be recognised and supported.

What happens if further assessment is needed?

If, at the end of the assessment we feel that further specialist assessment is required, we will make suggestions and recommendations for this. Where we consider a specific diagnosis likely and we cannot make the diagnosis, we will state this and suggest further specialist assessment.

What recommendations will we get?

This will be dependent on the outcome of the assessment. Each report will include specific recommendations tailored to your child.
